50-OFF STORES, INC. REPORTS INCREASED SALES

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- San Antonio based off- price apparel retailer 50-OFF Stores, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: FOFF) today announced its net sales for the 1993 fiscal year ended Jan. 29, 1993 increased 39.1 percent to $181.0 million from $130.1 million. Net sales on a comparable store basis for the fiscal year were down 2 percent.
For the fourth quarter ended Jan. 29, 1993, net sales increased 35.5 percent to $61.6 million from $45.5 million and net sales on a comparable store basis decreased 6.4 percent.
For the four-week period ended Jan. 29, 1993, net sales increased 30.5 percent to $7.6 million from $5.8 million for the same period last year. Net sales on a comparable store basis decreased 7.1 percent.
Charles Siegel, the company's CEO, commented on the results. "Although net sales for the fiscal year increased 39.1 percent, they did not meet the company's expectations. We feel this was primarily due to unusual weather patterns that occurred throughout the year. Additionally, 10 of the company's stores that operate along the Texas/Mexico border were negatively impacted during the months of December and January due to the Mexican government's strict duty enforcement on goods purchased in the United States."
The company expects to open 32 stores during calendar 1993, primarily in new markets in the Southeast. Twelve stores are planned to open in late March, including its first stores in Kentucky, Florida, North Carolina and Missouri.
50-OFF Stores, Inc. currently operates 98 stores in eight states in the South and Southwest.
