5,400 people on bail for more than six months.
MORE than 5,400 people have been on bail for more than six months, fresh figures have revealed, as proposals to limit how long suspects can be bailed for are being considered.
A survey - compiled by Radio 5 Live - shows that 71,526 people are on bail, including 5,480 who have been bailed for half a year.
The force which had bailed a suspect for the longest time was the Metropolitan Police - three-and-ahalf years.
The new figures come after Home Secretary Theresa May (left) told the College of Policing annual conference in Warwickshire that the Government would look at introducing a statutory time limit on how long suspects could be kept on pre-charge bail.
Scotland Yard has come under criticism in recent months after Operation Yewtree - the investigation set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal - saw Paul Gambaccini, Jim Davidson and Freddie Starr left on bail for months only to be told they would face no charges.
