5,000 'false' abuse bids.

Byline: NIALL MOONAN

ALMOST 5,000 false allegations of child abuse were levelled against religious between 1998 and 2001, campaigners claimed yesterday.

Let Our Voices Emerge (Love), which represents victims of false claims, said the figure was official Department of Health data.

And Love spokeswoman Florence Horsman Hogan added yesterday: "Figures for estimated claims to the Redress Board by the end of 2005 are 4,000.

"The amount of proven false allegations far outweighs the total claims of residential child abuse.

"Yet EUR4.2million is given to residential child abuse claims.

"Nothing is given to set up a hotline for fraudulent abuse claims, nothing for counselling and no acknowledgement that these false allegations exist."
