4th annual symposium to be held on Nov. 7.

The fourth annual award-winning, full-day professional development symposium THE Marketing Event 2008, held by the New York Area Chapter of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS), will be held Friday, November 7.

The program, which earned the First Place Award for an Outstanding Education Programming in SMPS National's Striving for Excellence Awards in 2006, will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the American Conference Center, 780 Third Ave (between 48th & 49th Streets).

THE Marketing Event is an annual symposium that draws over 150 A/E/C marketers, business developers, firm principals, and chief-level officers to hear from the nation's top business experts. This year's program, organized by the SMPS-NY Professional Development Committee and Lauren Hlavenka, Assoc. AIA (Handel Architects' Director of Marketing and SMPS New York Chapter President), has a major focus on how to improve your firm's competitive advantage in the current slowing economy.

Developed for building and design industry leaders committed to excellence in the marketing, business development, and communications efforts of their firms, THE Marketing Event will feature 12 interactive learning sessions from which attendees can select. Among the speakers at THE Marketing Event 2008 on Nov. 7 will be keynoter Tern Langhans, founder of Blah Blab Blab Etc. Inc., and Sally Handley, President of Sally Handley Inc.

Ms. Langhans will kick off the event with a keynote discussion on "Maverick Marketing: How to stand out from the herd, get better results, and wrangle more clients." Identifying how you are viewed by the target audience and what sets you apart from the rest will lead you to finding that competitive advantage needed to sustain work in the current economic downturn, she says.

Ms. Handley will be presenting "Marketing: the Next Generation," an informational lecture preparing the next generation to take on leadership roles in the industry. The other programs will cover:
