47. Walter Mosley. 2005. Read by Ossie Davis. 5 cds. 6.33 hrs. Listening Library. 0-307-20662-9. $45.00. Vinyl; plot, author, reader notes. JS

Young 47 is destined for the hard life of a field slave on a Georgia plantation, but when he meets the copper-skinned runaway slave Tall John, 47 learns there are larger and more dangerous threats to all he holds dear than the violent slave master. Mosley has successfully crossed into YA fiction with this captivating mix of history, SF and study of the human condition.

Davis may seem like an unlikely choice to read the part of a 14-year-old youth, but listeners discover that while 47 is 14 years old in body he is really over 100 years old and musing retroactively on his extraordinary transformation. Actor Davis is an ingenious match for this thought-provoking novel. Julie Scordato, YA Libn., Columbus Met. Lib., Columbus, OH
