46 pc of Americans reject evolution in favour of creationism.

New York, June 6 ( ANI ): A new poll has found that nearly half of Americans still believe that God created the human race as it is today.

46 percent of Americans believe that God created the human race in a single day 10,000 years ago, a newly released Gallup poll has revealed.

The poll found that Americans' ideas about the origin of mankind have remained virtually unchanged in the 30 years Gallup has surveyed on the topic.

"All in all, there is no evidence in this trend of a substantial movement toward a secular viewpoint on human origins," the New York Daily News quoted Frank Newport, Ph.D., Gallup's editor in chief as writing.

According to the survey, 78 percent of Americans today believe that God played some role in how people came to exist, while only 15 percent attribute it to evolution alone.

32 percent said that they believe humans evolved over time but with guidance from God.

Surveyors also took a look at respondents' religious beliefs, concluding that regular church-goers are most likely to be creationists.

Nearly two-thirds of people who said that they attend church weekly believe God created humans, as against 25 percent of those who attended church seldom or never.

Participants' political views and levels of education were also factors.

58 percent of declared Republicans said that they believed in creationism as against 41percent of Democrats and 39 percent of Independents.

Only 5 percent of Republicans said that they believed humans evolved without any help from God.

Gallup found that those with post-graduate degrees were the least likely to believe in creationism. But among groups with less education, the creationist viewpoint was the most popular.

Newport noted that the belief in creationism that almost half of Americans today hold is "at odds with the preponderance of the scientific literature."

The survey was conducted on a random sample of more than 1,000 adults by phone in all 50 states. ( ANI )
