41 cops face data breach probes.

Dozens of police officers are being probed for allegedly accessing confidential information.

There are 41 Police Scotland officers and two civilians on restricted duties and another has been suspended.

Six of those being probed have been taken off frontline duties for nearly two years.

Scottish Police Authority figures show they account for almost half of the 97 staff taken off duties because they're under investigation.

Brian Docherty, chairman of the Scottish Police Federation, said: "Of course if it right and proper that police use of data is subject to scrutiny but it would be unfair to say these figures are indicative of a problem within the police service."

Earlier this year, the Sunday Mail revealed more than 100 serving officers had been accused of crimes including rape and theft.
