400 labourers get free check-ups on World Labour Day.

Dubai: Around 400 workers received free basic health check-ups along with health awareness lectures on World Labour Day on Friday.

World Labour Day also known as International Labour Day and International Workers' Day, is an event that takes place on May 1 every year to celebrate the achievements of workers.

The Health Awareness Camp, which was organised by the medical wing of the Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD) took place at the Al Meher workers' accommodation in Dubai.

The event, called Your Health is the Community's Health, aimed to create health awareness and motivate blue-collar workers to adopt healthy habits.

"We are conducting basic health checks that include checking the labourers' blood pressure, blood sugar and BMI. We are also conducting hepatitis C screenings and dental and eye checks," said Dr Faisal Ikram, the General-Secretary of PAD and gastrointestinal surgeon at Mediclinic City Hospital.

The participating hospitals and clinics at the event included the American Hospital, NMC Hospital, The City Hospital, Northwest Clinic, Aster Medical Centre and RAK College of Dental Sciences.

Dr Ikram said health awareness lectures about diabetes, hypertension, and occupational hazards and hygiene were also given to the workers. PAD has been conducting health awareness camps regularly twice a year at various labour facilities.

"Every year, on the occasion of World Labour Day we go to different labour accommodation that has a large number of workers. Last year we went to a site with 800 labourers," he said.

Dr Ikram said having such check-ups are important because there have been many cases where the labourers -- who rarely get check-ups -- were found to have serious health problems.

"We have had cases where we found workers with very critical cases of diabetes and hypertension and they were sent to the hospital right away, also any labourer who requires further treatment will receive it free of charge by the RAK College of Dental Sciences, while those who need glasses will also get them for free."

Dr Ikram said in addition to the check-ups and health lectures, there are competitions and prizes for the workers as well as refreshments.
