4-hr wait for the AA.

STRANDED motorists had to wait up to four hours for the AA at the weekend as the heatwave caused a huge surge in breakdowns.

Patrols were told not to contact head office "unless really necessary" as drivers bombarded call centres across the UK.

Unions said yesterday the AA was paying the penalty for 3,000 job cuts in two years.

Paul Maloney, GMB national organiser, said: "The AA is now a fair-weather service, unable to cope with very hot, cold or changeable weather."

The AA insisted only a "handful" of members had to wait four hours. A spokesman said: "With the best will in the world, mistakes do happen."
