4,000 back gay marriage petition vote.

Byline: EXCLUSIVE by JILLY BEATTIE

THREE people a minute are signing an online campaign calling for a referendum on gay marriage in Ulster.

Almost 4,000 have already backed the change.org petition created by Co Antrim man Chris Torbitt and the figure is rising fast.

The Northern Ireland Assembly rejected a proposal calling for the introduction of gay marriage after debating the issue for a fourth time on Monday.

A total of 96 MLAs took part in the vote with 47 for and 49 against the Sinn Fein motion calling for civil marriage equality for all.

Chris, 26, said yesterday people should now be given the chance to decide.

The Newtownabbey man added: "Equality is not a luxury, it is a right and at the moment in Northern Ireland civil marriage is not open to everyone so people are not being treated with equality.

"Our world needs to change and only we can change it."
