3dfx Ships Voodoo5 5500 AGP, the First Graphics Solution to Deliver Real-Time FSAA for All 3D Applications.

Recent Demonstrations Garner Best of E3 Awards and Reinforce Impact of FSAA

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 22 /PRNewswire/ --

3dfx Interactive(R) Inc. (Nasdaq: TDFX) today announced the company has begun shipping its highly-anticipated Voodoo5(TM) 5500 AGP. The product will be available to consumers Friday May 26. Voodoo5 5500 is the only consumer graphics board to offer application-independent, real-time full-scene hardware anti-aliasing (FSAA) that is compatible with all major APIs including Direct3D(R), OpenGL(R) and Glide(R) titles. It features dual 3dfx VSA-100 (Voodoo Scalable Architecture) processors with the T-Buffer(TM) digital cinematic effects engine and 64MB of total graphics memory.

"Voodoo5 5500 is a revolutionary product," said Alex Leupp, president and CEO of 3dfx Interactive. "It essentially upgrades the end user's entire game library. FSAA does more to improve a game's image quality than any other 3D feature introduced in the last five years. With Voodoo5 5500 AGP, 3dfx delivers anti-aliasing with higher performance, phenomenally better image quality and greater compatibility than any competing solution."

E3 Reinforces Out-of-Box Experience Message

Voodoo5 product delivers a stunning out-of-box experience when compared to what competing products offer. Voodoo5 products were recently demonstrated at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 2000) in Los Angeles, Calif., where 3dfx gave many editors their first opportunity to experience FSAA in action. The results of seeing this technology in action, rather than just anti-aliased screenshots, were overwhelmingly positive.

"I must say that the best internal hardware award goes to 3dfx for their Voodoo5 cards," said Mazi Bahadori, editor-in-chief of Tech Extreme. "Overall, the Voodoo5 provides for an excellent out of the box experience that any gamer will truly enjoy."

"After reading all the hype, we finally got to see the Voodoo5 5500 in action, and we were impressed," agreed Andrew Brown, hardware editor of The Tech Report. "The effect of toggling FSAA off and on was not subtle; texture crawl and jaggies were instantly eliminated with FSAA enabled."

"I was skeptical, but it is a great feature, one that improves the imagery more than any other I have seen in recent years," added Scott Meyers, chief content officer of Maximum3D.

Full Scene Hardware Anti-Aliasing (FSAA)

Previously available only in professional visual simulation systems, such as military flight simulators, FSAA removes visual artifacts such as "jaggies" and pixel "popping." Voodoo5 5500 AGP delivers much smoother video-like images that create a dramatically improved immersive experience.

"Once you see FSAA in action, you will never want to go back," said James Yu, Hardware editor of The Firing Squad. "After seeing it once, you can't help but notice the flaws in image quality when you go back to playing games without FSAA. When I saw Homeworld on the Voodoo5 5500, I was blown away." "4X FSAA is absolutely stunning ... " reported Billy Wilson of VoodooExtreme.

Dave Altavilla of HotHardware remarked, "FSAA on the Voodoo 5 was so good we can never go back to non-FSAA supported games and be truly satisfied ... It was a real improvement in our level of immersion and sense of speed."

"The Falcon 4 flight sim was simply AMAZING with the FSAA turned on ... I could rave on about the Falcon game for a day and I don't even like flight sims ... that is how much better it looked," raved Kyle Bennett of HardOCP.

Designed for Leadership Performance and Compatibility

Voodoo5 5500 AGP is newly designed from the ground up to satisfy even the most demanding gamers. 3dfx's FSAA technology achieves higher performance and far superior title compatibility than any other competing solution. "We deliver twice the performance of our competitors' FSAA solution with equivalent, if not, better image quality," said Gary Tarolli, senior vice president and chief technical officer at 3dfx. "We expect to achieve an even greater level of market dominance with Voodoo5 5500 AGP. And as for content compatibility, it's no contest. Others say that you will have to wait until a later version of Direct3D to get fully-compatible FSAA, but with Voodoo5 5500 AGP we deliver it to gamers right out of the box."

T-Buffer Digital Cinematic Effects Engine

The Voodoo5 5500 AGP includes the T-Buffer digital cinematic effects engine. This exclusive 3dfx technology enables content developers to easily use realism-enhancing digital-Hollywood techniques, such as motion blur, depth-of-field blur, and soft shadows and reflections, previously available only in high-end movie production studios.
