3M TEST KIT USED IN FOOD POISONING CRISIS

ST. PAUL, Minn., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- 3M (NYSE: MMM) announced today that it has rushed shipments of a rapid test kit for a certain type of food poisoning to Northwestern states where more than 300 people have become ill, apparently after eating tainted hamburger.
The 3M test is designed to screen meat samples to indicate the absence of a specific strain of fecal bacteria (E.coli0157:H7) in about a day. Other test methods can take more than a week to provide results. The 3M test has been widely used in the Northwest, since an outbreak of food poisoning began there in early January.
3M said that in January, it shipped the equivalent of a 10-month supply of the product to an in dependent laboratory, which serves area food processors, and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which monitors food safety.
The company said it has increased production of the tests and expects to have an ample supply of the test kits available by the end of this month.
The self-contained test kit, called the Petrifilm brand test kit- ?can detect the presence of one cell of the bacteria in 25 grams of raw meat or one cell in 50 grams of cooked meat. (A quarter-pound hamburger pattie weighs about 115 grams.)
Because of the food-poisoning crisis, 3M said it is presently shipping all of its available product to the independent laboratory and the USDA.
