CHICAGO, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- 3M (NYSE: MMM) today launched its second significant innovation in the traditionally sleepy soap pad category -- Scotch-Brite(TM) Never Scratch(TM) Wool Soap Pads. The new 3M product is the first soap pad that effectively cleans delicate surfaces, including nonstick cookware, glassware and stovetops, without scratching. This introduction closely follows the 1993 launch of Scotch-Brite Never Rust Wool Soap Pads, the company's first foray into the $100 million wool soap pad market. Never Rust pads have already yielded an approximate 20 percent market share and have driven significant category growth.
Like Never Rust pads, Never Scratch pads resemble steel wool, but they don't rust or splinter. Never Rust Wool Soap Pads are for heavy- duty cleaning, while the Never Scratch Pads are designed to clean delicate surfaces. The fibers of both pads are made from recycled plastic beverage bottles. The packaging is made from 100 percent recycled paper. The detergents used are biodegradable and phosphorous- free.
According to a Du Pont tracking study, 73 percent of all cookware sales today are nonstick -- double the level of five years ago. "Despite the popularity of nonstick cookware, no one had developed an effective soap pad for this cookware -- until now," said Tom Paul, 3M Home Care product manager. "Our research shows that 50 percent of consumers use steel wool soap pads to clean Teflon and Silverstone, even though they know steel wool scratches these surfaces. Sixty-eight percent of consumers questioned say they'll use Never Scratch Wool Soap Pads instead of steel wool soap pads."
Nonstick cookware is just one possible use for Never Scratch pads. They also work well on countertops, tile walls, floors, bathroom fixtures, -- virtually any surface that can be scratched during cleaning.
3M spent more than four years creating Never Rust and Never Scratch soap pads. "Consumers told us they wanted a heavy-duty soap pad that would clean like steel wool, but wouldn't rust or splinter. They also said they wanted a pad that effectively cleans nonstick cookware and other delicate surfaces without scratching," said Paul. "We used our knowledge of abrasives, resins and adhesives to create Never Rust and Never Scratch soap pads to meet these divergent needs."
Never Scratch Wool Soap Pads are expected to be just as successful as Never Rust pads. Concept and home-use tests indicate even higher consumer interest in Never Scratch Soap Pads than for Never Rust pads. Eighty percent of consumers in home use tests said they would "definitely" or "probably" buy Never Scratch pads, compared to 72 percent of consumers in home use test for Never Rust pads.
Not only do these products perform well, they also provide another end-use for recycled plastic. The fibers are made from recycled plastic beverage bottles. "Of course, these products won't solve the solid waste problems in the U.S., but each new product that uses recycled plastic creates new demand for this material and makes it more worthwhile for more communities to recycle," said Paul.
Scotch-Brite Never Scratch Wool Soap Pads are now being shipped nationally. Four- and eight-count packages are available, with retail prices of $.75 and $1.25, respectively. The product is being sold through grocery stores, mass merchandisers, discount merchandisers, convenience stores, hardware stores and drug stores. The new product launch will be supported with an aggressive television advertising campaign as well as trade and consumer promotions.
3M's Home and Commercial Care Division manufactures and sells products for the care of home and commercial settings, including such well-known brands as Scotch-Brite scouring pads, Scotchgard(TM) aerosol protectors and O-Cel-O(TM) sponges.
