3D Realms Titles Go Exclusively to TEN for 5 Years; TEN to be exclusive online partner for all upcoming titles, including Duke Nukem 3D.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 19, 1996--Total Entertainment Network (TEN) today announced that Apogee Software Ltd. (Apogee/3D Realms) has licensed to TEN the exclusive worldwide online rights to all its games for the next 5 years (except for Terminal Velocity(tm), which TEN will have non-exclusively).

The first Apogee/3D Realms game to be featured on TEN will be this spring's explosive title, Duke Nukem 3D(tm). The agreement supersedes the original, game-specific deal between the two companies, announced Aug. 14, 1995.

"Once we fully explored our Internet options, the choice was clear," said Scott Miller, president of 3D Realms. "TEN's platform uses superior technology, and their vision for multiplayer gaming is dead-on. Now we can focus on the games, while TEN handles the online issues."

Daniel Goldman, president of TEN, explained why exclusive agreements are beneficial to TEN's partners. "Scattering a game across multiple online services distorts customer perception, creates more work for the developer, and segments players," said Goldman. "But when a game is exclusively on TEN, publishers like Apogee can rely on a consistent and cohesive experience for all players."

On TEN, people can play top multiplayer games within a community of players. Members can access the service through their own Internet connection or call one of TEN's nationwide modems which provide high-speed PPP Internet access. While on TEN, members will have access to many community support features while remaining a click away from the World Wide Web. The software will be available initially for Windows 95 and later for the Macintosh.

Leading publishers are now using TEN as a multi-point Internet gaming platform. TEN has online rights to over a dozen different games by Apogee/3D Realms, Maxis, MicroProse, SimTex, Spectrum Holobyte, and SSI - over half of which are TEN exclusives. Games will include the TEN software so players can connect directly from the game.

Total Entertainment Network, based in San Francisco, was formed from the merger of Planet Optigon Inc. and Outland Inc. - two companies which have been developing online technologies and communities for the last 12 years.

TEN received its initial funding in June 1995 from Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers. Other investors include: Ameritech; The Carlyle Group; Dominion Income Management Corp.; Goldman Sachs; Robertson, Stephens & Co.; and Vertex Management. Software Creations, the No. 1 rated BBS in the country, is a subsidiary of TEN. To reach TEN, visit or call 415-778-3500.
