3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced a family of workgroup switches that utilize Layer 3 switching for the edge of the network. The SuperStack(R) 3 Switch 3200 family is designed to route traffic across local network segments shared by workgroups, switching this traffic locally rather than relying on routing in the network core.

Enterprise networks are frequently built in a hierarchical fashion, with groupings of users by geography or organization tied together at the network center or core, and distinct broadcast domains deployed to help scale, secure and improve network stability. Layer 3 switching transmits traffic across these broadcast domains and between the network and the outside world. Layer 3 in an edge switch connected to user desktops sharing multiple domains will optimize performance of the workgroup by locally switching all local traffic, including that destined for another domain.

There are two models of the 3Com SuperStack 3 Switch 3200 family. The SuperStack 3 Switch 3226, with 24 10/100 ports and two dual-personality copper / fiber (SFP) Gigabit ports, has a list price of $845 (USD). The SuperStack 3 Switch 3250, with 48 10/100 ports and two dual-personality copper / fiber (SFP) Gigabit ports, has a list price of $1,495 (USD). Both switches are expected to be shipping by mid April.
