Layer 3 Functionality Of New SuperStack(R) 3 Switch 3200 is Ideal

for the Small and Medium Office, Branch Office, K-12 Schools and

Universities with Segmented Workgroups

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced a family of workgroup switches that utilize Layer 3 switching for the edge of the network. The SuperStack(R) 3 Switch 3200 family is designed to route traffic across local network segments shared by workgroups, switching this traffic locally rather than relying on routing in the network core.

"3Com's solution is a good fit for K-12 public schools," said Bruce Ottens, Network/System Manager, Valley Local Schools District in Ohio. "The dual-use ports provide flexible deployment options and the switch will allow us to segment academic and administrative traffic while improving our network's security. In addition, the web interface is extremely easy to navigate."

The SuperStack 3 Switch 3200 switches are cost-effective, easy to configure, performance-enhancing and perfect for enterprises and other organizations that perceive a growing need for Layer 3 switching for their workgroups.

"The SuperStack 3 Switch 3200 series is much easier to deploy and maintain than comparable switches on the market because of its dynamic routing, which automatically updates the Layer 3 network without network operator intervention," said Shaun Paice, director of workgroup systems, 3Com. "With the price of Layer 3 switching coming down, more companies are seeing Layer 3 at the edge for workgroups as a quick way to optimize overall network performance, security and stability."

Enterprise networks are frequently built in a hierarchical fashion, with groupings of users by geography or organization tied together at the network center or core, and distinct broadcast domains deployed to help scale, secure and improve network stability. Layer 3 switching transmits traffic across these broadcast domains and between the network and the outside world. Layer 3 in an edge switch connected to user desktops sharing multiple domains will optimize performance of the workgroup by locally switching all local traffic, including that destined for another domain.

Key Benefits of the SuperStack 3 Switch 3200:

Ease of Use: Easy to deploy and maintain because of its dynamic routing, which automatically updates the Layer 3 network without any manual intervention.

Performance: Wirespeed Layer 3 switches with 10/100 desktop connections designed for high performance connectivity. Packet prioritization gives optimal performance for real-time applications such as voice and video.

Scalability: Supports up to 2,000 external routes, allowing it to scale as the network grows.

Security: Enhances security with standards-based network login, Access Control Lists, Secure Shell and Secure Sockets Layer encryption.

Total Cost of Ownership: Low-cost solution optimized for workgroup edge locations.

Pricing and Availability
