36m Britons have chip and pin cards.

MORE than 76. 6m chip and pin cards have now been issued to 36m-plus customers.

The Chip and Pin Programme said it had reached all its 2004 roll out targets for upgrading card holders and businesses to the new system.

More than three quarters of card holders in the UK now have one or more chip and pin cards.

People with the new more secure cards will now be able to enter their pins at 636, 000 upgraded tills.

UK companies will be processing on average 45 chip and pin transactions every second.
