35,000 CWA-REPRESENTED WORKERS RATIFY AMERITECH AGREEMENTS
CLEVELAND, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Contracts covering 35,000 Communications Workers of America-represented workers at Ameritech have been ratified by an overwhelming 78 percent vote in what CWA Vice President Bob Johnson said was the highest ratification vote turnout since divestiture of the Bell System in 1984.
In announcing the results today, Johnson said the voting margin represents a regionwide compilation of votes. Each individual contract -- agreements covering 12,000 Michigan Bell employees; 10,000 employees of Ohio Bell; 4,500 Wisconsin Bell employees; 4,000 Indiana Bell employees; 2,700 Illinois Bell employees; and 1,800 employees of Ameritech Services, Inc. -- passed by similar margins.
"On behalf of the leadership of our union, I want to thank the local officers, stewards and members who stood by their union through this long negotiating process. The results we achieved at the bargaining table are the fruits of that patience," Johnson said.
The agreements with Ameritech provide more than 12 percent in pay hikes over the next three years, along with improvements in health care, retirement and educational benefits. The 1992 pact was the first time that Ameritech agreed to include companywide negotiations for benefits. This is also the first CWA agreement with Ameritech to be negotiated without a strike since the company was formed.
