3 of the Best from Supermarket Shelves.

Byline: Wine seller with Brian Elliott

2011 Charte d'Assemblage Cotes de Gascogne (PS5.32 instead of PS7.99 until Tuesday at Waitrose) Only three days left to catch the stars of Waitrose's European Fine Wine Showcase like this impressive French white blend. It combines zesty pear drop and lemon freshness with subtle hints of tropical fruit that add substance and texture. Great value at just more than a fiver.

2011 Dr L Riesling (PS7.99 at Majestic until Tuesday when it goes up to PS8.49, but minimum overall purchase rules apply) For the last week of the month, I have included one commendation that exceeds the usual PS6 limit. This delightful Mosel version by Ernest Loosen (Dr L) perfectly balances all the familiar off-dry flavours with appealing, concluding lime-centred acidity and a fresh apple-influenced prickle. It really does justify spending an extra pound or so.

2012 Australia Cabernet Sauvignon (PS4.49 at Lidl) Although this consistently reliable favourite has insufficient tannin for along shelf life, it remains great, smooth, easy going, ready-todrink cabernet. Like its predecessors, this new vintage combines mint, cinnamon and mellow blackcurrant fruit with just a hint of tannin to make it all work well with food.
