3 of the Best from Supermarket Shelves; Wine seller; STAR BUY.

Byline: with Brian Elliott

2009 Cepa Lebral Rioja Reserva (PS5.99 at Lidl)

This red just gets better and better. As a Reserva, the wine has spent 18 months in oak where it acquired its rounded vanilla, nutty and chocolate backdrop. Sometimes that process reduces a wine's fruitiness but the cherry and bramble flavours here lose none of their original density and vibrancy.

2012 Tiger Horse Chenin Blanc Pinot Grigio (PS4.99 down from PS6.99 until November 3 at Morrisons)

South Africa provides some interesting blends in this round of Morrison promotions - the 2013 Stormhoek Chardonnay Viognier (at PS5.99) is a decent bottle, too. Here, Chenin Blanc contributes smooth banana flavours while, unlike some Italian versions, the Pinot Grigio has sufficient ripeness to provide floral pineapple undertones yet enough acidity to bring a balanced citric edge.

2012 Callia Bella Malbec (PS5.99 until October 28 at Majestic, minimum purchase rules apply)

San Juan, this wine's homeland, is just north of Argentina's famous Mendoza region but this well-priced Malbec easily rivals its neighbour's superstars with soft damson and blueberry fruit, a creamy texture and a fresh, spicy finish.

BEER OF THE WEEK

PS1.39 only at William Brothers Seven Giraffes Ale, 500ml, PS1.39

Seven Giraffes Ale pours a deep gold with aromas of elderflower and citrus hops, followed by sweet caramel. On the tongue, the biscuity malts are perfectly balanced with the bitterness of the hops, freshness of the lemon and a lingering floral elderflower aftertaste.

An extraordinary brew.
