3 killed, 1 seriously hurt in Saitama head-on collision.

SAITAMA, Japan, March 18 Kyodo

Three people were killed and a fourth critically injured around midnight Sunday in a head-on collision between a station wagon and a truck in Satte, Saitama Prefecture, police said Monday.

The police said Hirokazu Uetake, Hideharu Okano and Makoto Kawashima, all aged 20, died in the accident, which also left an 18-year-old girl critically injured. Masaharu Sato, the truck's 50-year-old driver, was unhurt.

Uetake, of Goka, Ibaraki Prefecture, and his three other friends dined with four other people in Satte, north of Tokyo, on Sunday night and were heading for a bowling alley in neighboring Ibaraki Prefecture when their vehicle hit the truck, the police said.

According to an initial police investigation, the station wagon crossed the central divider and hit the guardrail before colliding with the truck.
