2015 Vino Lascito Sangiovese
(PS6 instead of PS8 until June 5 at Tesco)
Italy's Rubicone region, south east of Bologna, has a growing reputation with sangiovese grapes - and often produces less expensive versions than neighbouring chianti. This one has well-defined cherry, raspberry and plum fruit with good acidity, hints of thyme and vanilla but Central Italy'slightly chewy tannin.
(PS2 for 355ml bottles at Asda)
Great to see Asda substantially expanding their craft beer range with a flood of new arrivals that have only been in Scottish stores for a few days. One that already impresses is this American East Coast IPA with neatly balanced citrus touches and which, as usual, is maltier than West Coast equivalents. Alternatively, try Asda's crisper, fruitier, pilsner style Brewgooder at PS5.50 for a pack of four 330ml cans.
STAR BUY 2016 Finca Los Trenzones Verdejo (PS4.99 at Lidl while stocks last) Lidl's latest bi-monthly Wine Cellar promotion began on Thursday and has a strong Spanish flavour. My pick in the PS5-PS6 range is this fresh white from Castilla-La Mancha. It uses the verdejo grape to create tasty wine with orange-based depth and an almost minty prickle of acidity.
