2ND LD: 2 JAL planes make emergency landings, no one hurt.

NARITA, Japan, May 8 Kyodo

(EDS: ADDING DETAILS, INCORPORATING STORY ON ALTIMETER FAILURE IN ANOTHER JAL PLANE)

A Japan Airlines jumbo jet from New York bound for Narita airport outside Tokyo made an emergency landing Sunday at Shin Chitose Airport in Hokkaido after oxygen masks in the passenger cabin were released due to reduced air pressure, JAL officials said.

Another JAL airplane on a flight from Nagoya to Manila made a landing Sunday at Kansai International Airport in Osaka Prefecture, changing its destination after its altimeter failed to function, airport authorities said.

No one was hurt in either incident, JAL officials said.

The Boeing 747 which had come from Sao Paulo in Brazil via New York with 355 passengers and 19 crew members made the emergency landing at 12:50 p.m.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Committee in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said the incident was considered ''serious'' and it will dispatch two investigators to Shin Chitose Airport to look into it.

The masks are designed to be automatically released in the event of reduced pressure in the cabin.

After the oxygen masks were released, the pilot reduced the plane's altitude to about 3,000 meters and flew the plane about an hour before making the emergency landing.

JAL believes the masks did not drop because of a mechanical hitch and that pressure was actually reduced. The airline is investigating why depressurization occurred.

According to the authorities, the altimeter of the JAL flight from Nagoya to Manila, which was carrying 85 passengers, became stationary at around 10:40 a.m. shortly after it departed from Central Japan International Airport near Nagoya.

After getting a new altimeter installed at Kansai airport, the plane departed at 12:30 p.m. for Manila, they said.
