NAGANO, Japan, Sept. 24 Kyodo

A 15-year-old boy was arrested Monday on suspicion of attempting to murder his father with a hand ax while the man was asleep at home in the town of Tatsuno, Nagano Prefecture, local police said.

The junior high school student appeared at a nearby police station around 2:30 a.m. Monday, telling the police that he had struck his father on the head with an ax. He has admitted to having an intention to kill his father, according to the police.

Police officers went to his home and found that his 44-year-old father had sustained a head injury, according to the police. The father was taken to a hospital but his life is not in danger.

The arrest came a week after a similar incident in Kyoto Prefecture, in which a 16-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of killing her 45-year-old father, a police officer, with a hand ax while he was lying on his bed at home in Kyotanabe.

According to police investigators, the boy is suspected of having struck his father on the head several times with the ax around 2 a.m. while he was asleep. There was a lot of blood left at the scene.

The boy is believed to have left his home with the ax and walked to the nearby police station just after attacking his father. When the boy went to the police station, he was wearing a white shirt, black pants and socks but no shoes, the police said.

Before the boy turned himself in, his mother called the police around 2 a.m. to report the incident, saying, ''My husband is bleeding from his head at home,'' according to the police.

Police investigators are questioning the student to find out more about the situation and his motives, they said.

The names of the student and family members are being withheld as the suspect is a minor.

The boy lived with his parents, an older brother, an older sister and a younger brother. There seemed to be no major trouble between the boy and his father, the police said.

According to the junior high school the boy attends, there were no particular problems with him.

In the Kyoto case, the girl, a vocational school student, was quoted as telling investigators she killed her father because she did not like him. After the Kyoto police arrived at the scene, they found her father's body with cuts to his neck.
