* Tina Turner is living the dream in her lakeside Zurich home, 60 years old and never better, she tells SN. She still loves to sing, but vows that she won't extend her career past its prime: "I want the second half of my life to be heaven," she says.

* After voting down a proposal to join the EU in December 1992, Swiss voters are even less inclined to join in 2000. Opponents argue that bilateral agreements give the country what it needs. In opinion polls, the count is 40% opposed, 37% in favour and 23% on the fence.
