"When Rusher, Quayle, Bush, Terry, and others invoke the specter of 'creeping secular humanism/ they are using jargon that plays to an underlying (though seldom acknowledged) paranoid strain among their audience. These people share a belief that the United States--indeed all of Western civilization--is shot through and through with the rot of moral decay and is teetering on the verge of collapse. Legal abortion, homoerotic and 'sacrilegious' art and movies, pornography, heavy metal and rap music, multicultural 'paganism' and 'tribalism,' even the New Age movement (which many humanists detest) are all conflated as just some of the many warning signs of a morally sick society that is suffering the logical results of a (sometimes evoked, often implied) 'secular humanist conspiracy'to undermine traditional Bible-based moral values."
