240 NUCLEAR WORKERS WILL CARRY THEIR MESSAGE TO WASHINGTON
ABOUT A LETHAL STEW BEING BREWED IN SOUTHERN OHIO
Two hundred and forty members - one for each day of their 240-day strike against nuclear contractor Martin Marietta Energy Systems Inc. - of Local 3-689 of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union will carry their message on unsafe conditions and company-government attempts to undermine their union directly to the federal government on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
Martin Marietta Operates the Department of Energy's uranium enrichment facility at Portsmouth, Ohio where more than 1,000 OCAW members have engaged in an unfair labor practice strike since last June 11.
The 240 atomic energy workers will hold a protest demonstration and conduct informational picketing in front of the White House at 9 a.m. At noon, they will appear at the Department of Energy Building. From there they will journey to the Capitol Building for a 2 p.m. rally.
"DOE is spending millions of taxpayer dollars to subsidize Martin- Marietta's attempts to destroy our union and put our community at grave risk," said John Knauff, president of Localnning at full capacity, at any cost - taxpayers' cost. And they're doing it with poorly trained, unqualified people."
"They're brewing a lethal stew in southern Ohio," Knauff added. "This plant has on-site fissionable radioactive uranium. If mishandled, it could cause a critical mass which can emit enormous amounts of radiation instantly. It could cause an explosion, and if it's released into the environment, the radioactive contamination and pollutants can cause long-term damage and cost the taxpayers enormous amounts of money for nuclear and industrial cleanup."
DOE's enrichment plant at Portsmouth is one of only three in the United States that enrich uranium. The Portsmouth facility is the only plant capable of producing commercial uranium for nuclear reactors, nuclear submarines and nuclear war heads.
