24,000 ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY VOLUNTEERS KICK OFF LITTER PROGRAM THIS WEEKEND

24,000 ADOPT-A-HIGHWAY VOLUNTEERS KICK OFF LITTER PROGRAM THIS WEEKEND
This weekend, about 24,000 Adopt-a-Highway volunteers will be on Michigan's roadsides picking up litter, the Michigan Department of Transportation (M-DOT) said today. This is the first of three regularly scheduled pickups this year.
"Drivers should slow down and be careful when they see one of the Adopt-a-Highway groups out on our roadsides," said program coordinator Scott Wheeler. "The volunteers picking up trash along our highways expect to find enough litter to fill over 96 garbage trucks. They will be looking out for us and we need to look out for them."
M-DOT's Adopt-a-Highway program has grown from 24 groups in April 1990 to almost 2,400 groups today. M-DOT said the efforts of these volunteer groups are clearly visible in the cleaner, more attractive roadsides. Over 5,300 miles of the 9,500 miles of state highways have been adopted.
