21 schools in Abu Dhabi to have elevators for special needs pupils.

Abu Dhabi: While 21 public schools in the emirate of Abu Dhabi are being fitted with elevators to aid access for special needs pupils and 107 other schools are being refurbished before the start of the 2012-2013 academic year.

In a statement sent by the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) yesterday), officials said that more than 120,000 textbooks had been distributed among the schools in the emirate.

The statement added that preparations for the new academic year were on track. Administrative and teaching staff are expected to start the year on September 2, while the new term will commence for pupils on September 9.

Ahmad Sultan Al Shamsi, general services division manager at the Adec, said that more school bus supervisors were being drafted, in collaboration with Emirates Transport, to ensure the safety of the increased number of schoolchildren in the new academic year. Additional buses will also be provided, and all vehicles will have the school's name clearly written in Arabic inside the bus.

Special care is also being taken to ensure that schools that have been merged have sufficient labs and activity rooms on the campus.

Other maintenance works in preparation for the new year include replacing tiles and paint, as well as the creation of shaded parking lots and replacement of shades in play areas.
