HYDERABAD -- Sindh Chamber of Agriculture, a representative body of agriculturist and growers in Sindh ha declared 2017-18 as year of destruction for agriculture economy of Sindh for the reason that sugar mills of the province have failed to start crushing season for sugarcane cultivated in millions of tons in the province and also their refusal to pay growers rate of Rs,280 per maund as notified by Sindh government.
SCA president Qabool Khatian and general secretary Zahid Bhurgari have said in a statement here that at present sugarcane crop standing on 7 lac acres of land was drying up due to stubbornness of sugar mill owners by their refusal to open sugar mills resulting in no harvest of sugarcane that was destined to ruin agriculture economy of Sindh and pushing land holders, farmers and peasants to unpredictable ruination.
They warned that this situation was to culminate in poverty and annihilation of agriculturists in the province. They demanded from government and chief justice to order implementation of notification of Rs.280 for 40 kilograms of sugarcane to be paid to growers by sugar mills and also to order opening of sugar mills to save the agriculture economy of the province from total paralysation.
