2016 Olympic Day results.
Manama, May 18 (BNA): Ahmed Joda raced to victory in the second running race at the 2016 Olympic Day, organized by the Bahrain Olympic Committee in cooperation with the Capital Governorate.
The race, open for those aged from 15 years and above, was over a distance of 3km and took place near Fatima Kanoo Mosque in Tubli where hundreds of athletes competed in five different age category races.
Joda, who put on a splendid performance to win his second race at the Olympic Day after finishing first in the previous race organized by the Northern Governorate on Saturday, was followed by runner up Sami Mohammed and third-placer Yousef Sulaibeikh.
The day, which was attended by BOC general secretary Abdulrahman Askar, Capital Governorate Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa and top officials from both authorities, started with the boys 6 to 8 years category race.
This youngest category race was a well-fought affair as Spencer James Peckham came on top, finishing just ahead of Kareem, who settled for second place.
Hasan Isa was triumphant in the 9-11 years race, which was over 1km, after a fierce battle with Talal Mohammed Najem who came second.
In the 12-14 race, which was over 1.2km, Elias Elyasi proved too strong to win the competition's gold medal. Not far behind were Mahdi Jahromi and Reda Isa, who clinched the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
In the women's race, which was open for athletes from 15 years and above, Manar Ebrahim was in fine form as she crossed the finish line first. The 6-8 years category was dominated by Maryam Khalid, who topped the race with ease.
Other races saw Fatima Adel and Maryam Ehab win the 9-11 and 12-14 years group races. Fatima overcame a stiff challenge to win the 9-11 race, finishing in front of Ma'ab Jameel and Batool Salah, who were respectively second and third.
Maryam followed suit as she put on a spirited show to finish the 12-14 race first against runner up Mayar Ehab and third-placer Dana Hani.
The races were followed by the awarding ceremony, at which Abdulrahman Askar and Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa honored the top three runners in each race.
Askar congratulated the winners and wished other success in future races. He also extended his gratitude to Al Khalaf International, agents of Fayrouz malt drink in Bahrain, for being the official sponsors of the 2016 Olympic Day.
This two-week event will now take a two-day break before action continues on Saturday (May 21) with the third running race, to be organized in cooperation with the Southern Governorate.
