2012 bowhunter deer forecast: deer across North America are thriving, and bowhunters are doing their part to help manage them.

THE NUMBER OF DEER--whitetails, blacktails and muleys--roaming North America totals 31,293,008, a figure that's 1,663,637 lower than last year's total (Note: Indiana, Florida, North Dakota, Ohio, and Pennsylvania did not report). Whitetails make up 88 percent of the grand total with a population of 27,491,169 deer. As always, Texas has more whitetails than anyone with 3,333,100 deer. Michigan and Mississippi tie with 1,750,000 whitetails, followed by Alabama (1,600,000) and Wisconsin (1,500,000).

A record 1,159,744 whitetails, blacktails and mule deer were reported harvested during the 2011 archery season. This figure was 48,492 more deer than the previous year's record. Once again, Michigan bowhunters led the archery deer harvest category with 117,633 deer, followed by Wisconsin (88,985), Pennsylvania (83,970), Ohio (82,732), and Georgia (66,352).

When you add the total deer harvest figures for all weapon types, another record total of 7,215,904 deer were harvested throughout North America in 2011. Texas leads the total deer harvest with all weapons, with 688,076 deer hitting the dirt in the Lone Star State, followed by Georgia (464,003), Michigan (436,036), Wisconsin (347,184), and Alabama (337,658).

The archery success rate across North America was 23.8 percent. Arkansas bowhunters led with a remarkable 63-percent success rate. Behind them are bowhunters in Alabama (55 percent), Mississippi (53 percent), Texas (49 percent) and Kansas (43 percent). Ten other states enjoy a success rate of 30 percent or better.

Overall, 16.1 percent of the total deer harvested in North America were bagged by bowhunters. New Jersey had the highest percentage of deer arrowed by bowhunters, compared to the total harvest, with 49:6 percent. This was followed by Connecticut (39.9 percent), Ohio (37.6 percent), Illinois (34.2 percent) and Massachusetts (34 percent). Who says bowhunting isn't a significant deer-management tool?

We know the number of firearms hunters has declined over the last two decades. What the media has missed is the number of bowhunters has remained steady. This year we set another record with a total of 3,351,891 bowhunters in North America. Michigan leads this category with 300,000 bowhunters. Pennsylvania (297,803), Wisconsin (254,117), Ohio (250,000), and New York (220,000) make up the top five bowhunting states. Collectively, these states make up 39.4 percent of all bowhunters in North America. Compared to 10 years ago, we only reported 3,086,396 bowhunters in North America. At the very least, this means that interest in archery hunting remains high.

The average cost of a resident hunting license is $43.15. That's the cost of half a tank of gas in most trucks ... pretty cheap if you ask me!

A tip of the Bowhunter hat and a sincere thanks to all, the state/provincial biologists who helped compile this year's "Deer Forecast." Without them, this article would not be possible.

NOTE: As with every "Deer Forecast," make sure you read and fully understand all the regulations in your state/ province before going afield. And most importantly, as the National Bowhunter Education Foundation (NBEF) at www.nbef.org says within their Project "STAND" (Stop Tree Stand Accidents 'n Deaths) awareness program, "Hunt Smart and Hunt Safe!" and wear a full-body harness! And do yourself a favor and take the NBEF's Distance Learning Program at www.bowhunter-ed.com/index.html.
