2012 Dwight Camper Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award.

The Dwight Camper Undergraduate Research Award was presented to Jeffery T. Myers, a senior chemistry major from Winthrop University, in a special ceremony during the 2012 Annual Meeting of the South Carolina Academy of Sciences at USC-Aiken. The award consisted of an honorarium of $250 and a handsomely framed certificate. Jane Camper, wife of the late Dr. Camper, presented the award to the winner. Mr. Myers delivered an interesting seminar at the meeting entitled "Synthesis of Benzisoxazolo[2,3-a]azinium Tetrafluoroborates" in which he summarized his undergraduate research at Winthrop involving the synthesis and characterization of novel benzisoxazolopyrdinium salts. According to his research mentor, Dr. Jay Hanna of Winthrop University, Mr. Myers has worked on this project since the spring semester of 2009 and has given several oral and poster presentations on his work.

This prestigious award was named in honor of Dr. Dwight Camper, former Professor Emeritus at Clemson University, and is presented annually at the Academy meeting to the most outstanding undergraduate researcher in the state. Criteria for this award include an overall undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 and participation in a research project for at least one year that will contribute to the generation of a scientific publication. The nomination form and details for application can be found under the Awards menu on the Academy's website at
