2008 Nursing Excellence Awards honors 26 nurses.

Albuquerque, NM--A total of 26 nurses and three individuals from throughout New Mexico were honored at the 2008 Nursing Excellence Awards. The awards were hosted by the New Mexico Center for Nursing Excellence and presented by Lovelace Health System Oct. 25, 2008 at the Hyatt Tamaya Resort. Nurses were recognized in 22 professional categories.

Martha Tanuz, RN, BSN, of Pecos, New Mexico was named Distinguished Nurse of the Year. Tanuz, who is a contractor to the New Mexico Department of Health for the Tuberculosis and Refugee Health Program in Santa Fe, has been a nurse for 34 years. While working as a nurse manager, supervisor and clinic nurse in Rio Arriba County, Tanuz used her skills and knowledge to assure services to more than 1,000 residents per month. She also became a self-taught epidemiological nurse, working with local, state and national partners to address the first outbreak of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome. She also helped secure antibiotics and treatment for as well as vaccines to prevent outbreaks of other infectious diseases such as Streptococcus Group C linked to Queso blanco (white cheese); Salmonella in beef jerky; and L-tryptophan, a dietary supplement that was found to cause deaths and muscle weakness.

Tanuz has authored research articles appearing in the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report" and participated in a Discovery Health Channel production of "Diagnosis: Unknown." She has also made professional presentations in Spanish to Latin American epidemiologists.

Tanuz has participated in numerous organizations promoting community health, including the Association of Practitioners in Infection Control and Epidemiology. She has been a mentor for elementary school students at Santa Fe and Pecos schools, has served on the Board of Directors of Pecos Valley Medical Center and Ambulance Service, and has volunteered for many years at her church and as a Red Cross volunteer to assist victims of emergencies such as the Cerro Grande Fire.

The Distinguished Nurse of the Year award was presented by the Bank of Albuquerque.

The Nursing Excellence Awards executive committee honored New Mexico State Senator Dede Feldman with the 2008 Friend of Nursing Award, which was presented by Daniels Family Funeral Services. Feldman, a public relations consultant, has served in the New Mexico Senate since 1997. She is currently chair of the Legislative Health & Human Services Interim Committee and has been a major supporter of nursing in New Mexico for many years. She carried legislation for the Nurse Practice Act as well as other legislation that resulted in New Mexico becoming one of the most progressive states for nurses in the country. Her support of increased funding for nursing has directly resulted in allowing the New Mexico's nursing schools to expand their capacity and double the number of nursing students over the past five years.

Jack and Donna Rust of Albuquerque received the first annual Community Legend Award in recognition of their philanthropic support of nursing. Over the last several years, the Rusts have provided more than $4 million to support nursing scholarships and professional development and specialty certification for nurses throughout the state. The support of nursing research has advanced nursing practice throughout New Mexico.

Major event sponsors included Lovelace Health System, Presbyterian Healthcare Services, University of New Mexico Hospitals, Standard Register and the New Mexico Business Weekly. For more information, visit www. nmnursingexeellenee.org or call (505) 861-7067.
