200 DLO jobs are secured.

ALMOST 200 jobs at North Lanarkshire Council have been secured after an 11th hour reprieve from the Scottish Office.

The posts in the maintenance section of the Direct Labour Organisation had been in the balance as the deadline imposed for re-organising contracts approached.

Two-thirds of staff were guaranteed jobs under a new public-private sector partnership but 200 faced the axe if further contracts from the Scottish Office were not agreed.

But after meetings with Scots Secretary John Reid, it was agreed the DLO could retain an additional pounds 5million of contracts, with pounds 5.5million being granted to the private sector and pounds 3million being put out to tender.

The DLO faced a humiliating inquiry after auditors discovered it had pounds 4.6million debts.
