20 BROTHERS TO FACE SEX ABUSE CHARGES; EXCLUSIVE.

TWENTY Christian Brothers are set to be charged in connection with sex and physical abuse at a school for orphans.

Hundreds of pupils at Artane Industrial School in Dublin were abused over a 16-year period until 1968.

Gardai said yesterday they also expected to bring charges against 10 lay teachers.

Only one man has so far been charged as a result of the two-year investigation.

Victims were informed of the decision to prosecute the Brothers by letter this week.

A senior Garda source said yesterday: "The letters have gone out to the people whose cases will be pursued.

"The case is ongoing, the arrests are continuing at an average of one or two a week and some of the men involved are facing very serious charges.

"The DPP informed us that we should not try and prosecute men who carried out minor assaults on boys - that means those without broken bones or scars."

The Christian Brothers order has apologised to the victims.

Accusations have been made against nearly 100 Brothers.

A spokesman said yesterday that the Order was still co-operating fully with the investigations.

Of the brothers listed in the complaints, 23 have since died.
