2 DAYS 8 DEAD; The horrific figures that will shock everyone in Britain Bloody toll of knife assaults.

Byline: BY JEFF EDWARDS

KNIFE attacks left eight people dead and two fighting for their lives in just two days of bloody mayhem.

Four of the killings took place over 24 hours in three miles of each other in London. There were two more each in the Midlands and North West.

The capital's victims included a youth of 19, the 20th teenager to be murdered in London this year.

In addition to the grim death toll a boy of 15 - possibly sliced with a knife or cleaver - and a man stabbed in the back, stomach and chest are fighting for life.

The attacks came amid mounting public concern and a major Mirror campaign aimed at ending the scourge of knife crime blighting the nation.

Appealing for calm, Met Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said yesterday: "I want to reassure the public we're doing everything possible to get knives off the streets."

The bloodshed began at 2.30pm on Thursday when police were called to a fight in Edmonton, North London. It was believed to be over cans of lager.

They found a 19-year-old youth with fatal stab wounds.

A woman of 26 and man of 34 were held.

Three hours later, Adnan Patel, 20, was dragged by a gang from his car in Leyton, East London.

He was then battered to the ground with golf clubs and baseball bats before being stabbed.

He staggered back to his car and drove off, but crashed. Witness Amos Mak said: "I saw Asian men fighting in the street.

"This guy couldn't get away and crumpled to the ground." Four men are held.

Three hours later, police found Ugandan student Yusuf Miro, 20, dying of stab wounds in a stairwell in Walthamstow. He was thought to have been stabbed in the head and chest. At 4am yesterday Gennar Jaronis,41, was found dead from stab wounds behind a pub in Tottenham.

The two London knife victims fighting for life are a boy of 15 from Hackney and a man found lying in blood in Harlesden.

Away from the capital, a man of 20 was knifed to death in the street in West Bromwich. A suspect of 21 is held.

Mark Beard, 25, died in the Nottingham suburb of Bulwell after being attacked by a knifeman.

In Crosby, Liverpool, Tony de Asha was arrested after the knifed body of his wife Joanne, 45, was found at his home.

A man of 57 was arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a stabbed woman was found in a burned-out house in Tarleton, Lancs.
