1998 FAIR HEAVY ON VARIETY; METROLINK SERVICE EXPANDED FOR EVENT.

Byline: David Greenberg Daily News Staff Writer

New versions of traditional environmental and animal attractions highlight next month's Ventura County Fair, which this year features expanded Metrolink service to accommodate weekend entertainment and fireworks displays.

Organizers anticipate the 1998 fair, which will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 5-16, will attract slightly more than the 270,000 who attended last year's event.

``We're really pumped up about this fair,'' said Teri Raley, a fair spokeswoman. ``It has a new energy.''

The last Metrolink train will leave the Seaside Park fairgrounds at 10 p.m. with stops in Oxnard, Camarillo, Moorpark, Simi Valley and Chatsworth. The train only comes to the fair on Saturdays and Sundays, however.

Among the featured entertainers scheduled are the Doobie Brothers, Bill Haley's Comets, Pablo Cruise, the Village People, Sawyer Brown, Neil Sedaka and the Harry James Orchestra.

Organizers asked the Agriculture and Natural Resources, Floriculture and Youth departments to ``throw away the book'' on past presentations.

This year's offerings include a shallow-water tide pool showing marine wildlife; a wildlife awareness presentation by an Ojai resident who rescues and rehabilitates eagles; a ``beagle brigade'' trained to sniff out Mediterranean fruit flies and other pests; and new lighting and presentations for thousands of flowers, including 600 varieties of roses.

Daily tickets are $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 6 to 12 and seniors over 55. A pass for the duration of the fair is $45 for adults and $20 for children and seniors. Parking is $5 per day.

All shows are free with paid fair admission.

The Grandstand Arena holds about 10,000 people for concerts and 4,500 for rodeos and motor sports.

The following is a schedule of fair events:
