1993 SALLY ORDWAY IRVINE AWARDS PRESENTED; DAVIS NATIVE ARTS CIRCLE AND TOPSY SIMONSON HONORED FOR WORK IN THE ARTS

ST. PAUL, Minn., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- First Trust today announced the recipients of the 1993 Sally Ordway Irvine Awards, presented annually to recognize extraordinary contributions to our region's artistic and cultural environment. The awards were presented today at a luncheon ceremony at St. Paul's Ordway Music Theatre.
This year's awards were presented to: John Davis, founder of the New York Mills Arts Retreat and Regional Cultural Center; Native Arts Circle, an organization that works to promote understanding of, and appreciation for, Native American Arts; and Topsy Simonson, a long-time supporter of the arts in the Twin Cities.
"One of our region's defining aspects is the wide variety of great arts organizations and the strong support they receive from the community," said Kent Larson, executive vice president of First Trust. "Even so, we don't recognize often enough the organizations and individuals who contribute to our region's outstanding arts community. The Sally Ordway Irvine Awards give us a chance to do this."
Davis received the 1993 Sally Ordway Irvine Award for Vision. The award recognizes his use of innovative arts programming and education to stimulate economic growth and development in the rural community of New York Mills, Minn., population 972.
Native Arts Circle, founded in 1992, received the 1993 Sally Ordway Irvine Award for Initiative. The award recognizes Native Arts Circle's educational and outreach programs to share with the public the rich cultural heritage of Native American arts and artists. The award also recognizes the role Native Arts Circle plays as an important resource for Native American Artists statewide.
Simonson received the 1993 Sally Ordway Irvine Award for Commitment. The award recognizes her involvement with the region's arts community for more than three decades. She has served for more than 25 years on the board of Children's Theatre Company, and her caring, personal involvement and generous support have helped to sustain many of our region's most important cultural assets.
The Sally Ordway Irvine Awards were established in 1992 by First Trust, and are based on an award First Trust presented to Sally Ordway Irvine in 1986. That award, on permanent display in the Ordway Music Theatre's lobby, recognized Sally Ordway Irvine for her singular role in making the Ordway Music Theatre a reality.
The three categories in which the Sally Ordway Irvine Awards are presented -- Vision, Initiative and Commitment -- are based on the wording on the award presented to Sally Ordway Irvine in 1986.
Recipients of the Sally Ordway Irvine Awards are selected by a committee consisting of the immediate past recipients of the Sally Ordway Irvine Awards, a professional grantsmaker, and representatives from First Trust and the Ordway Music Theatre. Recipients receive a crystal replica of the award presented to Sally Ordway Irvine in 1986, as well as a $1,000 cash award from First Trust.
Individuals and organizations from any artistic or cultural field are eligible to receive the awards, as are artists, professional administrators, volunteers, grantsmakers and philanthropists. Particular consideration is given to smaller organizations and individuals whose contributions may not have received widespread public notice.
