 1992 PACKAGE RATES ANNOUNCED FOR
SUGARLOAF GOLF CLUB: MAINE'S NO. 1 GOLF COURSE
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Now entering its seventh full season, The Sugarloaf Golf Club has been rated as Maine's finest by Golf Digest magazine for five consecutive years. With a professional staff headed by PGA Pro Scott Hoisington, the Sugarloaf Golf Club is truly a full-service resort facility with a driving range, a fully stocked pro shop, complete food and beverage service, and a fleet of cars.
Early Season Golf Packages are available which include lodging at the Sugarloaf Inn, greens fees, cart rental, a full breakfast, a health club pass, and full use of all the resort amenities including outdoor pool and tennis, all for only $69 per person double occupancy. This package is available any day of the week from opening (anticipated in mid-May) through July 3. From July 4 through closing, a special midweek package will be available priced at $83 per person double occupancy with the same components as the Early Season Package. For weekend periods, a $10 per person supplement will be added to the package price.
The Sugarloaf Golf Club "provides a visual feast for the golfer," according to Golf Club Editor Ron Whitten in the January 1987 article describing the 18-hole championship resort course which Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed and built in September 1985. "Our panelists gave it the highest numbers for aesthetics of any new course in all categories," he added.
When he built the course, Jones said there was nothing else like it in all of New England. Its setting takes full advantage of the wilderness mountain environs, and the pristine waters of the Carrabassett River wind their way through the fairways which are framed with stands of tall white birch trees. Each fairway is separated from the others by the Maine woods, and you'll play through a mountain valley and over and around the Carrabassett River. He created a series of tee locations which accommodate golfers at every level of play. The course is challenging from the championship tees at 6,900 yards but is playable for all levels from the front tees at 5,400 yards.
Jones wrote, "We tried to do something quite different for this part of the country in that it's a mountainous setting; it's a deep wilderness woods course, which is Eastern, and we used some of the third dimensions that are apparent in Western golf. The combination is unique in the whole country where you have a wilderness course and occasionally a moose will come and add a little interest to the shot and each hole is virtually separated from the others."
Weekend golf schools are available every weekend of June, July, August and September. This year, there will be special midweek golf schools offered as well. Included in the program is practice and instruction in all aspects of the game. A covered driving range provides "weatherproofing" for the program.
