1991 EARNINGS UP AT WICOR; DIVIDEND DECLARED

1991 EARNINGS UP AT WICOR; DIVIDEND DECLARED
 MILWAUKEE, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- WICOR's 1991 earnings from

continuing operations increased substantially over last year, according to Stuart W. Tisdale, president and chief executive officer. WICOR is the Milwaukee-based parent of Wisconsin Gas Company and Sta-Rite Industries, Inc.
WICOR reported 1991 earnings from continuing operations of $21.5 million and $1.54 per share, vs. comparable earnings of $14.3 million and $1.04 per share in 1990. Revenues were $681.7 million compared with 1990 revenues of $659.8 million.
Tisdale attributed the improvement primarily to increased natural gas deliveries at Wisconsin Gas and stronger international sales at Sta-Rite.
"We're confident that a return to normal weather and better economic conditions will further improve earnings," he said. He noted that WICOR's total return to shareholders exceeded 32 percent in 1991. Total return is the combination of share price appreciation and reinvested dividends.
Wisconsin Gas posted net income of $17.1 million in 1991 compared with $13.2 million in 1990. Though weather for the past two years has been considerably warmer than normal, natural gas sales were helped somewhat in 1991 by temperatures that were 5 percent colder than the prior year. Tisdale said the addition of nearly 8,000 new customers and increased industrial demand in 1991 also lessened the weather's impact.
Sta-Rite Industries reported net income of $4.2 million from continuing operations in 1991, up from $0.8 million a year ago. The pump and water processing equipment manufacturer's sales increased from $202.2 million in 1990 to $205.2 million in 1991, but continued to reflect the recession and the weak housing industry. International sales, which were up 26 percent, helped offset the soft domestic markets.
Tisdale said WICOR's proposed acquisition of Autotrol Corporation, announced in December, is expected to close during the second quarter. Autotrol is a Milwaukee-based manufacturer of water treatment controls, valves and measuring devices.
 DIVIDEND DECLARED
