1989 SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS TOP GTE 'SUPER POWERS' RATING AS ALL-TIME GREATEST SUPER BOWL TEAM; RESULTS TO APPEAR IN SUPER BOWL GAME PROGRAM
MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- What's your vote for the greatest Super Bowl team of all time?
According to GTE "Super Powers," a statistical analysis of the 50 teams that have played in the NFL championship games, the most powerful squad in Super Bowl history is the 1989 San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers defeated the Denver Broncos 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV to complete a 17-2 season.
GTE "Super Powers" is a collaborative effort between the company, which is telecommunications consultant to the NFL and Super Bowl XXVI, and Steve Hirdt, a sports statistician. It is a sophisticated statistical rating system that compares the relative performance of each Super Bowl team. GTE "Super Powers" results will appear as a special insert in the Super Bowl XXVI game program.
Dick Enberg, GTE's NFL spokesperson who wrote the insert's introduction, believes the ratings will spark debate among football fans worldwide.
"Ask 10 fans to name the best Super Bowl team of all time and you probably will get 10 different answers," says Enberg in the insert. "Some would pick the dynasty teams -- the Steelers, Packers and 49ers. Others would say the overpowering Redskins of Super Bowl XXII or the perfect Dolphins of Super Bowl VII. As a broadcaster, I would pick the Bears of Super Bowl XX. But which team actually is the best? That's what the GTE 'Super Powers' rating is all about."
Rating Teams on Key Statistical Categories
How does the GTE "Super Powers" rate the teams? According to Hirdt, a member of the Elias Sports Bureau, each of the Super Bowl teams was rated on 10 key statistical categories: rushing and passing offense; rushing and passing defense; scoring offense; give-aways; total offense; scoring defense; take-aways; and, total defense.
Following that, the category scores were combined to produce a final GTE "Super Powers" rating number, which ranks the teams from 1 to 50.
The Super Bowl insert breaks down each statistical category, using colorful graphics and editorial copy, and lists the top five teams in each category. It concludes with the top 10 teams of the last 25 years:
1 -- The 1989 49ers (Super Bowl XXIV) vs. Denver Broncos.
2 -- The 1985 Bears (Super Bowl XX) vs. New England Patriots.
3 -- The 1987 Redskins (XXII) vs. Denver Broncos.
 4 -- The 1984 49ers (XIX) vs. Miami Dolphins.
5 -- The 1971 Cowboys (VI) vs. Miami Dolphins.
6 -- The 1983 Raiders (XVIII) vs. Washington Redskins.
7 -- The 1974 Steelers (IX) vs. Minnesota Vikings.
8 -- The 1977 Cowboys (XII) vs. Denver Broncos.
9 -- The 1976 Raiders (XI) vs. Minnesota Vikings.
