1985's outstanding independents; 300 who soared to new heights.

As the composition of the supermarket industry shifts due to new formats, chain closings, wholesaler consolidation and other factors, a new breed of independent grocer has emerged. Young, educated and eager, today's independents are seeking opportunities with an aggressiveness that has intensified dramatically in the five years since Progressive Grocer began honoring Outstanding Independents.

The nominating categories demonstrate what is constant and what is changing in the independent sector. Whereas Outstanding Achievement, Outstanding Merchandising and Crisis Management have always been well-received, new categories are introduced each year as the independent grocer becomes more sophisticated and diversified. This year's new category on skillful use of modern technology or research, and the response that it elicited from the nominating wholesalers, shows that independents are enthusiastically using computers to fine-tune their operations.

Three hundred grocers were chosen for the "1985 Honor Roll of Outstanding Independents." They include:

* A grandson of the founder of Liberal Markets, who has returned to Dayton, Ohio, to start Metro Markets, and has conducted 107 promotions during the past three years, including a million dollar sweepstakes and a cattle auction;

* A Georgia grocer who went on an acquisition binge, expanding from five to 14 stores in one year;

* A Philadelphia accountant with no grocery experience, who has built a losing 7,000-footer into a profit producer by transforming the site into a "Fine Foodery";

* A former A&P supervisor, who doubled volume at his small-town Ohio store since acquiring it from A&P;

* A Tennessee grocer, with one store leveled and another severely damaged by a tornado, who was back in business within two days;

* An Indiana man who was able to boost sales by 20% at his conventional unit, despite the fact that he opened a County Market super warehouse store two miles away;

* An independent in chain-dominated Los Angeles who has built his business to more than $600,000 weekly by selling products that "make people homesick."

The following pages profile 21 of the 300 grocers listed on the "1985 Honor Roll of Outstanding Independents." Altnough Progressive Grocer does not claim that these are the best independents in the country, their super performance during a year of change in the industry has earned them the admiration of their peers.
