1763: William Cobbett, political journalist and author of Rural Rides, was born in Farnham, Surrey. 1796: French society beauty Josephine de Beauharnais married the rapidly rising soldier Napoleon Bonaparte, then Commander of the Interior.

1831: The French Foreign Legion was founded by King Louis Philippe, with headquarters at Sidi-bel-Abbes in Algeria. 1862: The Battle of Hampton Roads, the first battle between iron-clad ships, took place during the American Civil War. The Confederates' Virginia and Union's Monitor fought to a draw, but the Confederates failed in their main objective of breaking a Union blockade.

1918: Foreign intervention in the Russian Revolution begins as the first British troops land in Murmansk, at first to secure Allied war stores in the port but later that year fighting an undeclared war against the Bolsheviks.

1945: US B-29s mounted a colossal overnight incendiary bombing raid on Tokyo: an estimated 100,000 people died in the firestorm, a greater death toll than from either of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan later that year.

1956: Britain deported Archbishop Makarios from Cyprus to the Seychelles for "actively fostering terrorism": he was a leading advocate of uniting Cyprus with Greece but denied any involvement with violent guerrilla organisation EOKA.

bN t91tt 1973: In a referendum boycotted by most Catholics, Northern Ireland voted in favour of staying in the UK by a majority of 90-1. 1993: Rodney King testified at the federal trial of four Los Angeles police officers accused of violating his civil rights.
