SANTA CLARITA - California Highway Patrol officers assigned to a stretch of Interstate 5 that includes the Santa Clarita Valley issued more than 160 speeding tickets Wednesday during a statewide I-5 speed crackdown, authorities said Thursday.

Of the 195 total tickets issued from 6 a.m. to midnight Wednesday by CHP officers from the Newhall station - who are responsible for a 40-mile portion of I-5, from the Ronald Reagan Freeway to the Kern County line - 164 were speeding citations, said CHP Officer Wendy Hahn.

The CHP special strike force operation, which ran from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday, targeted speeding motorists along the entire I-5 within California, from the U.S.-Mexico border to the Oregon state line.

``They (chose) the 5 because it goes through the whole state - it's a major traffic corridor of the West,'' Hahn said Thursday. ``The CHP is especially concerned about I-5 because you can't go too far in California without hitting it at some point.''

Newhall station ticket totals available Thursday afternoon included only those issued from 6 a.m. to midnight Wednesday, Hahn said. Five additional officers per shift were deployed from the Newhall station solely to target I-5 speeders during the operation.

Statewide, the CHP reported issuing 2,010 speeding tickets during the 24-hour operation - five times the number of speeding tickets issued in an average 24-hour span.

About 250 additional CHP officers were deployed across California for the strike force, according to information released by CHP headquarters in Sacramento. The CHP said it plans to conduct similar speeding- strike-force operations in the future, without providing advanced warning to the public.

``We're not out there because we like to write tickets,'' Hahn said. ``This is about saving lives.''
