16-1 Rationale to give Pipe team more Ces glory.
This race has been synonymous with the Pipe team over the years, and in Royal Rationale they have a runner with similar credentials to their previous horses who have either won or gone close.
The key to his chance is his close third in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot meeting in June. The two races are similar and I thought Royal Rationale should have won at Ascot as he got trapped well behind and on the wide outside, clearly travelling further than all the others in contention. In the circumstances he did really well to stay on up the home straight, and was closing on the front pair all the way to the line.
The second that day was Sesenta, who went on to win the Totesport Ebor off a 4lb higher mark, and back in fifth was Som Tala, who subsequently bagged the Northumberland Plate, so the form is rock-solid. A reproduction of that sort of form gives him a decent chance today, and I would forget his two hurdles runs since as he clearly isn't as good over hurdles as on the Flat.
Pipe had a big-priced winner at Cheltenham yesterday, and I also like Royal Rationale's draw in stall 28. Of the last 24 runners to finish in the first three in the Cesarewitch, 54 per cent have been drawn in stall 28 or higher, and clearly there is an advantage being drawn high.
Given that and also that hurdlers have a good record in the race, it is hard to see Fair Along running a bad race, and at 16-1 he can also Today's bets Doctor Fremantle 3.00 Newmarket 1pt win at 12-1 generally Fair Along 3.40 Newmarket 1pt win at 16-1 generally Royal Rationale 3.40 Newmarket 1pt win at 16-1 generally Already advised Wells Lyrical 3.40 Newmarket 1pt win at 16-1
