15 members of Kerala body pledge organs to HMC.

SANTHOSH CHANDRAN

DOHA AS MANY AS 15 members of Enamakkal Kettungal Welfare Association Qatar (EKWA), a socio-cultural organisation of Kerala expatriates, recently pledged their organs to the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) after their deaths in Qatar.

The members gave their consent in writing to HMC official Dr KC Chacko at the 10th annual day cerebration of the Association in Doha.

The move assumes special significance as the HMC in cooperation with the Supreme Council of Health (SCH), has started a campaign to liaise with potential donors and their families to increase the number of organ donations in the country.

Speaking on the occasion EKWA President Althaff Kettungal said, "Even though organ donation is not popular in this region, we hope our initiative will be an inspiration for other socio-cultural forums in Qatar to follow suit for a noble cause." Echoing him, General Secretary of the Association Abdul Aziz said, "15 EKWA members, including women, have already promised to donate their organs. We believe organ donation is one of the noblest services that a human being can offer for the well-being of others." It is worth mentioning here that several Shari'a councils and Islamic scholars have issued fatwas (religious edict) supporting organ donation as a noble act of charity.

Meanwhile, a special fund named 'Hayamol Memorial Fund' meant for cancer patients in India was also established on the occasion.

A member of legislative assembly (MLA) from Kerala and national secretary of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) Abdussamad Samadani urged the other socio-cultural organisations in Qatar to support the needy people in India.

Speaking on the occasion Lieutenant Shaheen Rashid al Atiq from the Security Department and Community Police told the Indian community members to feel free to contact community police for assistance anytime.

Other dignitaries who attended the event were Capt Nasser Darwish from the Public Guards department of the Ministry of Interior (MoI), Abdullah Hamed al Mulla, CEO of Qatar Sports Club, noted social worker Puthoor Abdul Rahman from Dubai, Uma Preman, RS Moideen, Isa Mohammed, AM Abdul Gafoor, PK Abdul Rasheed, Abu Kattil and PN Baburajan.
