15 KEY APPLICATIONS RUN AT INDUSTRY-LEADING SPEEDS ON CRAY RESEARCH SUPERCOMPUTER

 EAGAN, Minn., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Cray Research (NYSE: CYR), the world's supercomputing market leader, announced that 15 software applications used by industry and research centers now run at unrivaled speeds of more than 6 sustained gigaflops (billion floating point operations per second) on its top-of-the-line CRAY Y-MP C90 system. By comparison, the highest sustained performance for any code by a current massively parallel processing (MPP) system in the 1992 IEEE-sponsored Gordon Bell Prize competition was 5.4 gigaflops. Five of the codes have run on the Cray Research system at sustained speeds of more than 10 gigaflops, the company said.
 The CRAY Y-MP C90 system is the most advanced, usable high- performance computing technology available today," said Sara Graffunderhigh- performance computers, gigaflops speeds -- ultra-fast computations -- are important to get quicker results, or to tackle larger problems in more detail than in the past."
 When Cray Research announced the 16-processor CRAY Y-MP C90 system in Nov. 1991 the company also announced its technical goal of six gigaflops' sustained performance on the system. Sustained speed is the true measure of a supercomputer's performance, Graffunder said, noting that in recent tests at Los Alamos National Laboratory and NASA's Ames Research Center, current MPP systems were able to sustain only two to eight percent of their claimed "peak performance" in practice. "The CRAY C90 system frequently sustains 30 to as much as 80 percent of its theoretical peak speed, which is 16 gigaflops," she said. "We expect to bring a new standard for sustained-to-peak ratios to the MPP arena when we introduce the CRAY T3D system, our first MPP offering, later this year."
 Doing one calculation per second, it would take a person operating a hand-held calculator about 500 years complete what a CRAY Y-MP C90 system can do in just one second, Graffunder said.
 The 15 fast-running computer applications are in the fields of chemistry, petroleum, automotive and aerospace design, and general research.
