FIFTEEN pubs in Cardiff have made it to the Campaign for Real Ale's Good Beer Guide for 2017.

City centre mainstays like the Rummer Tavern, City Arms and the Pen and Wig made the list alongside relatively newer establishments like Cambrian Tap and Urban Tap House. One of the big winners was Hopbunker opposite the castle, which won the 2016 local pub award. The venue was previously the favourite student nightclub Barfly but has been converted by a father and son team into a hub of real ale.

Owain Lewis manages Hopbunker and his father is the owner. He said: "It was great when we won the local award but this will give us some nationwide recognition. We have 22 craft beers, it is the variety and the quality that have made us so successful.

Another city centre winner was The Gatekeeper on Westgate Street.

A Camra spokesman said: "The Gatekeeper deserves its place in the Good Beer Guide 2017. It is our belief that if a licensee serves an excellent pint of real ale, then everything else in the pub, including customer service, quality of food and atmosphere, are likely to be of an equally high standard."

The pub's manager, Andrew Harries, said: "I am delighted that The Gatekeeper has been recognised for the quality of its real ales by Camra members.

"We offer our customers an excellent range of real ales at all times, including those from regional brewers and microbrewers, as well as hosting our own beer festivals.

"Staff at the pub work hard to ensure that the real ales on offer are kept in first-class condition at all times and the pub's inclusion in the guide highlights this."

The Gatekeeper shares Westgate Street with fellow entry, Zero Degrees. When asked what got the bar into the guide assistant manager Mario Bowkowski said: "It's the beer! We know the beer is good here. Our most popular is the Pilsner and the American Pale Ale is second. Many people don't get the idea that we are brewing on site, but once they try it they love it."

Other entries in Cardiff included the Lansdowne in Canton, the Discovery, the Birchgrove and former video shop Andrew Buchan on Albany Road. Well known for their quizzes and good food the New Conway and Mochyn Du in Pontcanna also made the list.
