California Dental Assistants Association Report
The General Assembly for the California Dental Assistants Association was held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the Marriott Courtyard in beautiful Burbank, CA. Additionally, there was a Pre and Post Board Meetings on Friday and Sunday respectively.
An Educational Program offering a total of 3 CEUs preceded the General Assembly in the morning of April 2nd. We were fortunate to have 33 people registered; the first presentation was "Dental Implants: From Planning to Procedures" with Allan Charles, DDS, who is a Periodontist in private practice in Pasadena, CA. Our second portion of the program was Katie Bell, RDA, speaking on "How to Prepare for a Job Interview". Both subjects were well received and enjoyed. This was followed by a luncheon giving attendees an opportunity to exchange ideas and for CDAA Members to meet Non-Members.
CDAA has added a new local, Santa Clara County Dental Assistants Society. Thank you to the people responsible for forming this group, Eloise Reed, Gina LaRocca and Celia Watson. Their first meeting date was May 4th.
CDAA hosts a membership booth promoting our organization when and where deemed appropriate by our Board of Directors. This gives us an opportunity to promote our organization to prospective members and touch bases with those who already belong. To that end we were represented by volunteers recently at two venues. The following information is from their recent activities as reported by Shari Becker, CDAA's 1st Vice-President and Membership Chairman:
California Association of Dental Assisting Teachers Association (CADAT) annual session Manhattan Beach, CA, April 22-24, 2016. Shari attended this conference and manned a membership table for the weekend. There were approximately 130 in attendance for the event. The table was visited by most all the attendees and over 80 applications were given out to teachers to encourage their membership and their students. CDAA looks forward to working with CADAT in the future in encouraging support for ADAA membership.
CDA Presents Anaheim May 12-14, 2016. CDAA membership booth was well visited over the 3 days of the convention. CDAA gave out over 80 goodies bags to dental assisting students. The goodie bags were sponsored in part by Supply Clinic and Sprint.
We had a photo booth for students and others to participate in and all had a good time indeed! We passed out over 90 new member applications, distributed over 100 CDAA Journals, and had many inquiries regarding membership and services. The most common request from doctors is for finding qualified dental assistants for staff. We directed them to our member services online that include posting for resumes and job openings. CDAA will debut its own banner in San Francisco at the CDA Presents meeting at the Moscone Center scheduled for September 8-10, 2016.
Thanks are due to CDAA President Claudia Pohl! The CDAA website now includes a Members-Only Section. Please feel free to visit the website to check out CDAA information and events regularly.
CDAA has been waiting to see what action might be taken that affects the California Registered Dental Assistant practical examination based on the report from the OPES (Office of Professional Examination Services). The California Dental Board has made the Occupational Analysis report available on their website under calendar/May meeting/supplemental materials. After much discussion on this topic at the at the Dental Board/Dental Assisting Council meeting on May 11, 2016, the CDB voted to keep the practical examination, but work with OPES to rework it. This news is good--for now.
