12-YEAR-OLD AUTHOR TO AUTOGRAPH MOTHER'S DAY BOOK AT PULASKI VENTURE STORE MAY 8

ST. LOUIS, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Just as children of all ages are wondering how to pay tribute to mom on her special day comes the illustrated wisdom and words of 12-year old Tara Koosak, a published cartoonist and author from Cape Girardeau, Mo. On Saturday, May 8, Koosak will be autographing copies of her newest book, "Mom's Got Style," from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pulaski Venture Store located at 4433 S. Pulaski Road.
"Mom's Got Style," which features original cartoons and text about the relationship between mothers and their children, is dedicated to Koosak's mother, and was commissioned by Venture Stores, Inc., in honor of all mothers. The book will be offered free at area Venture Stores through Mother's Day, May 9, 1993.
"Mother's Day is a time to thank your mom for all the things she does through the year, and to thank her for being real understanding," said Koosak. "I can tell my mom everything and she tells me things, too. I think that's important."
Koosak, who began developing her talent as a cartoonist for her school newspaper, has written three books, beginning with "School Biz Is..." when she was in the third grade. Her second book, "Boy/Girl Daze Craze," is a pre-teen's view of the love/hate relationship between boys and girls.
Koosak hopes to write and illustrate other books and eventually create a syndicated cartoon strip. In the meantime, she is busy with activities typical of her peers -- shopping, talking on the phone and going to parties -- but also loves to read, especially books by her favorite authors, R. L. Stine and Linda Lewis.
"My life would be boring if I didn't know how to read!" claims Koosak. She is a strong advocate of reading for all children and credits her parents for getting her interested by reading to her as a younger child and enrolling her in a summer reading program at their local library.
"Tara has channeled her creativity and time into something very positive, which makes her an excellent role model for other children," said Julian Seeherman, chairman and chief executive officer of Venture Stores, Inc. "We are happy to support her work because Venture and the American Library Association share a commitment to encourage reading among young people."
Venture Stores, Inc., based in St. Louis, is a regional chain of quality discount stores that sells a wide variety of name-brand merchandise for the family and home. The company had sales of more than $1.7 billion in fiscal 1992. Venture currently operates 93 stores in eight Midwestern states. Venture is an independent, publicly held corporation with its common stock traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol VEN.
